Homework

Our team has carefully discussed the expectations for our children in terms of homework and / or support at home for their learning.

Class 1

• Reading 3 times per week
• Phonics work.
• Times Tables Rockstars (Year 1 only)

Class 2

• Reading 3 times per week
• Times Tables Rockstars

Class 3

• Reading 3 times per week
• Times Tables Rockstars
• 1 piece of Maths or English each week (alternate weeks for each subject)

Class 4

• Reading 3 times per week
• Times Tables Rockstars
• 1 piece of Maths homework
• 1 piece of English homework

All classes will be given the opportunity for optional topic based projects or activities half-termly.

Reading at home

Please help your child by supporting them with their learning at home. The single most important thing for children is reading – please read to them, model reading and hear them read whenever you can.

As a minimum, each child is expected to read 3 times per week. Children’s reading records will need to be signed by an adult so that staff can check their reading progress. Older children in Class 3 and 4 will need a suitable space at home to complete reading and homework tasks. Homework should largely be carried out independently by the children. Where children struggle, please notify their teacher so this may be addressed in school.

Helping at home

Apart from supporting your child with homework and reading, there are many other ways that you can help them at home to enable them to become independent in life skills and everyday tasks.

For example, it is important that all children come to school knowing how to use cutlery. Although, of course, we will help our youngest children during lunchtimes to practise cutting their food, we know that this can be challenging to master initially. Your help at home in encouraging children to eat at the table and to practise good hygiene is most welcome. We always ask our children to wash their hands before eating and ensure that they continually practise good table manners.

As the get older, children will need to learn how to tie their shoe laces and your help at home to encourage this skill is much appreciated. Practice makes perfect!

By the time a child comes to our school, they should be able to manage going to the toilet independently. This includes managing to take down their trousers / tights and pulling them back up again. Again, we will of course support them with this initially in Reception, however it is great when they are already confident with this skill before they arrive. As they get older, they need to be able to dress themselves and get changed for PE and swimming so it is important that they start to do this as soon as possible.
