Maths
Mathematics is essential for everyday life. It underpins so much of the world around us.
The aim of the Mathematics National Curriculum is to provide a solid foundation of skills and understanding, ensuring pupils are “fluent” solving calculations and are able to “reason mathematically” when solving problems by applying their knowledge.
Mathematics is taught in mixed age groups on a daily basis. Teachers use the Curriculum Prioritisation Resources from the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics to aid their planning. The spines celebrate the 5 big ideas in Mathematics (Mathematical thinking, Representation and Structure, Variation, Fluency and Coherence). These ideas are intertwined into every lesson; small meaningful steps are taken to build children's confidence and understanding.
Children are systematically taught to construct a deep knowledge, while linking all other areas of Mathematics together, using real-life problems. This ensures that the Maths is meaningful and the children can relate the various different structures to their own lives. Our hope is that this will help children to unpick reasoning and problem-solving questions more effectively, while continuing to improve their fluency.

Times tables
At Horsley Woodhouse, we recognise that times tables are the foundation of Mathematics. Children's Times Tables are systematically taught from Year 2 to Year 6. Children use a variety of different methods to learn the facts. We use the Times Tables Rockstars website to improve speed and accuracy. Please see the link below:
